How far in advance is it recommended to book the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
We recommend making the reservation as early as possible, ideally 3 to 5 months before the travel date, especially during the high season (April to October). This is due to the high demand for the Salkantay route and, mainly, the limited availability of entries to Machu Picchu, which are assigned in shifts and have restricted daily quotas.
For this reason, we suggest securing your reservation as soon as you have your travel dates and international flights confirmed, to ensure both the availability of the tour and entry to Machu Picchu.
What is the best time of year to take the 5-day Salkantay Trek tour?
The climate in the Andean region is divided into two well-defined seasons: the dry season (from April to October) and the rainy season (from November to March). During the rainy season, the weather can be variable, alternating between rain, sun, and cloudy skies in a single day.
The best time to do the Salkantay Trek is during the dry season, as it offers better conditions for hiking and clearer landscapes. However, the tour operates year-round, allowing you to experience it in any season.
How do I know if the 5-day Salkantay tour is for me?
The 5-day Salkantay tour is one of the most spectacular routes to Machu Picchu, ideal for those seeking adventure, nature, and stunning landscapes along the way.
This hike is designed for travelers with an adventurous spirit, such as couples, groups of friends, and families. However, it requires good physical condition and being prepared for daily hikes of several hours on different types of terrain and altitude.
It is recommended to undergo prior preparation and have good acclimatization in Cusco at least one or two days before the start of the tour, to adapt to the altitude and fully enjoy the experience.
Does it include entry to Machu Picchu?
Yes, depending on the reservation date, we will manage the entries according to the availability of circuits, always prioritizing Circuit 2. However, if there is no availability, one of the other two circuits will be assigned.
We recommend booking 4 to 6 months in advance to secure the best schedules and available options.
Does this tour operate year-round, including February?
Yes, the Salkantay Trek operates year-round, including the months of February and March, always subject to weather conditions. During this season, the rains tend to be more frequent and intense, so the itinerary may be subject to modifications, route changes, or even cancelations if the conditions pose a risk to the safety of travelers.
Although it is possible to complete the trek during the rainy season, we recommend traveling during the dry season, between the months of April and October, when the trail conditions are usually more favorable, the landscapes offer better views, and the trekking experience is much more comfortable and enjoyable.
What are the main differences between the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Route?
The Inca Trail requires limited permits and mandatory advance booking, making it a more exclusive route.
The Salkantay Trek does not require special permits, offering greater availability and flexibility.
On the Salkantay, you stay overnight in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, while on the Inca Trail, entry to Machu Picchu is made directly from the campsite.
Both routes require good physical condition and acclimatization in Cusco.
Is water provided during the Salkantay Trek?
During meals, we provide boiled, filtered, and safe drinking water. However, because we are in remote mountain areas, water for consumption is not included throughout the entire hike.
For your convenience, you can buy bottled water at some camps along the route. We also recommend bringing a reusable bottle and a portable water filter, as you will find various refill points where you can stock up and stay hydrated throughout the journey in a practical and sustainable way.
From what age is it recommended to travel with children and up to what age for adults on the Salkantay Trek?
The Salkantay Trek is one of the most comprehensive routes to Machu Picchu, ideal for travelers seeking adventure, unique landscapes, and an unforgettable experience in the Andes.
It is recommended for children from 8 years old who are used to walking and enjoy outdoor activities. For adults, there is no maximum age, and many travelers aged 60 to 65 or older successfully complete the route, always with good physical condition, prior medical evaluation, and travel insurance.
For children and seniors, private service is recommended, as it allows for greater comfort, safety, and a more flexible pace during the journey.
From how many passengers is the tour guaranteed and how many people are in the shared group on the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
We believe that the Salkantay Trek should be a unique experience, which is why we work with small groups of a maximum of 19 passengers with 2 guides.
Departures are guaranteed from 2 people. If you are traveling alone, you can also request to join a shared group, subject to availability. For more information, please consult with your sales executive or contact us at info@sakuraexpedition.com, where we will be happy to help you find the best option for your trip.
How many days in advance should I arrive in Cusco to acclimate for the 5-day Salkantay Trek tour?
To fully enjoy this adventure in the Andes and avoid possible complications with altitude sickness, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days in advance.
During that time, we can help you organize acclimatization activities, such as a half-day city tour of Cusco or a full-day excursion to the Sacred Valley, combining rest with exploration at your own pace.
If you are coming from another high-altitude area in Peru, one full day in Cusco will be enough to rest, recover from the trip, and enjoy the city before heading out on the trek.
How difficult is the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
The difficulty is considered moderate to challenging. The second day is the most demanding due to the ascent to Abra Salkantay, located at over 4,630 m. With proper acclimatization and a steady pace, most travelers manage to complete the route without any issues.
How many kilometers and hours per day are walked during the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
The complete route covers approximately 64 km (40 miles) and between 26 to 28 hours of walking in total.
Day 1: 10 km / 6 miles
Day 2: 22 km / 14 miles
Day 3: 12 km / 7 miles
Day 4: 20 km / 12 miles
Day 5: Visit to Machu Picchu
Each day includes between 6 and 10 hours of hiking, depending on the group's pace, weather conditions, and stops along the way for rest and visits.
At what altitude does the hike start and what is the maximum altitude reached on the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
The hike starts in Challacancha, located at 3,800 meters above sea level (12,467 feet). The highest point of the route is the Salkantay Pass, located at 4,630 meters above sea level (15,190 feet), which is reached on the second day of the hike.
Along the route, travelers will experience a remarkable change in landscapes and ecosystems, from the high Andean mountains to the cloud forests leading to Machu Picchu.
How safe is the trekking?
The Salkantay Trek is a safe and highly recommended route for adventure travelers. For a better experience, it is recommended to do it during the dry season (April to October), when the weather conditions are more stable and the landscapes are more enjoyable. During the rainy season, frequent rains and possible landslides typical of the Andean climate may occur, and it is subject to the weather conditions of its season.
Is it mandatory to have travel insurance?
Yes, for your greater peace of mind and safety during the trip, we recommend having travel insurance in case of any eventuality that may arise during the journey. This can provide you with assistance in cases such as lost luggage, cancelations, strikes, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events during your experience.
Will I receive travel information before traveling?
One day before your trip departure, you will receive detailed information with your guide, which can be either group or personal at your hotel.
Can I change my passport number after booking the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
The government will only allow us to change the passport numbers if we have a copy of the new passport and the previous passport. If you no longer have your previous passport, any government-issued identification document will be accepted, as long as the name is the same.
Additionally, make sure that your passport does not expire in the six months prior to or during your trip.
How to get to Cusco?
Most people will arrive in Cusco by air. Remember that the Cusco airport is only for domestic flights. If you are coming directly from abroad through Lima, you must collect your luggage in Lima and check it in again for your flight to Cusco. Four airlines operate round trips between Lima and Cusco. That includes LATAM Airlines, Jet Smart, Sky Airlines. They all offer similar schedules, but we generally recommend LATAM or AVIANCA airlines. They tend to be the most formal when unexpected flight cancelations or delays occur.
What clothing and equipment are recommended for the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
Comfortable and lightweight clothing, adapted to the conditions of the Andean climate, is recommended. Among the most important items are:
Trekking shoes with good support and grip, preferably not new.
Comfortable and quick-drying trekking pants
Waterproof clothing or rain poncho
Trekking backpack of approximately 50 to 65 liters
Hat or cap to protect from the sun
Trekking poles for greater stability on the uphill sections
Mosquito repellent and sunscreen
Camera with a charged battery to capture the landscapes
How many people fit in the Domes, Cabins, and Hotel?
We have domes for 2, 3, and 4 people. If you are traveling as a couple and wish to have an exclusive tent for yourselves, please inform us at the time of booking. Individual accommodations are also available upon prior request and at an additional cost.
Is it necessary to bring trekking poles for the Salkantay Trek 5 days?
Trekking poles are always useful for hikers and are recommended for this trek. There is a large number of stairs carved by the Incas that you will have to descend. They vary in height and are not all straight. Using trekking poles can help relieve pressure on the knees while traversing this part of the trail, and they will also be helpful on the uphill sections. For those who bring their own, make sure to have rubber tips; otherwise, the park rangers will not allow you to use them.

How long is the visit to the city of Machu Picchu on day 5 with the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
On the fifth day, you will experience an unforgettable time in Machu Picchu with your professional guide, who will accompany you on a tour of approximately 2 to 3 hours, sharing the history, mysteries, and secrets of this wonder of the world.
How do strikes or blockades affect the itinerary and what contingency plan is in place?
External factors such as strikes, protests, or blockades can cause changes in the itinerary of the 5-day Salkantay Trek. However, our team conducts constant monitoring and provides alternatives such as schedule adjustments, route changes, or rescheduling to ensure your trip.
Our priority is your safety and experience, which is why we recommend having travel insurance that covers possible unforeseen events or additional costs.
What happens if I feel unwell during the tour?
If any passenger experiences altitude sickness, exhaustion, or any other issue during the hike, our professional guide will assess the situation immediately and provide the necessary assistance. Depending on the traveler's condition and their location, appropriate actions will be coordinated to ensure their well-being and safety.
If on the first day you find that the trek has been more demanding than expected, we recommend considering the option of renting a horse for the second day, the most challenging stage of the Salkantay Trek. This service can help reduce physical effort and enjoy the experience with greater comfort. The reference cost is 65.00 USD, subject to availability.
Our main objective is to act quickly and responsibly to ensure safety, well-being, and the best possible experience throughout the entire adventure.
Are there bathrooms and showers during the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
Yes, during the trek you will find basic bathroom facilities at the campsites and rest points along the route. Regarding showers, some camps have cold water showers, while some locals offer hot water showers for an additional cost.
However, every morning our staff will provide hot water for personal hygiene, offering greater comfort during the hike.
Is there cell phone or internet signal during the 5-day Salkantay Trek?
Connectivity is only available until Mollepata in the morning (around 7:00 a.m.). Then, the signal is limited for most of the journey.
In some camps like Collpapampa, there may be WiFi available for an additional cost, but the mobile signal is intermittent or non-existent in high areas.
As you descend toward Santa Teresa and Aguas Calientes, the connection improves. We recommend informing family members that communication may be irregular during the hike.
Can I charge my electronic devices during the trek?
There are no electrical charging points during the Salkantay trek. Therefore, we recommend bringing a fully charged portable battery (power bank) to keep your cell phone, camera, or any other electronic device operational during the 3 days until you reach the town of Aguas Calientes.

Step 1: Availability Inquiry
Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check available dates. We will send you a personalized reservation form that each group participant must complete.
Step 2: Passenger Information
To manage the entry tickets to Machu Picchu, we need the following information from each participant, as it appears in the passport:

Nationality
Without this information, it is not possible to obtain the tickets.

Step 4: Final Confirmation
When the tickets are secured, you will receive your official confirmation invoice. At that moment, your reservation will be guaranteed 100%.
How is the outstanding balance paid?
The outstanding balance must be paid in cash (US dollars or Peruvian soles) during the informational meeting in Cusco or in the days before.
Can the date be canceled or changed?
Once the reservation is confirmed, cancelation or refund of the entry to Machu Picchu is not allowed, as the tickets are processed immediately to guarantee your space. Likewise, date changes are subject to availability and the program's conditions.
We recommend reviewing the cancelation policies with your sales advisor beforehand.
Can I leave my luggage in your office?
Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Do you give tips?
Tipping is part of the tradition of any hike to Machu Picchu. While it is true that we pay good salaries to all our team, any extra amount is always appreciated. Please note that this is not mandatory and you should never feel pressured by it.
