DAY 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - Chachabamba - Wiñay Wayna - Inti Punku Gate - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes

Today, you will trek the legendary original Inca Trail, discovering ancient archeological sites and arriving at Machu Picchu through the historic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), just as the Incas did over five centuries ago.

The 2-day Short Inca Trail tour begins with pick-up from your hotel in the city of Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m., after which we will head to the town of Ollantaytambo in private transportation. The journey takes approximately an hour and a half. In Ollantaytambo is the main train station to Machu Picchu, here we will board the train that will take us to Kilometer 104, where the hike to Machu Picchu begins.

Upon arrival, we will have to pass through the first checkpoint, where we will have time to prepare ourselves better. The first archeological site on the route is Chachabamba, where our guide will provide an introduction to the history of the Incas and the importance of this ancient route used to reach Machu Picchu. Next, we will begin an uphill hike surrounded by lush vegetation typical of the cloud forest and spectacular Andean landscapes.

After approximately three hours of walking, we will arrive at the archeological site of Wiñay Wayna. This impressive place is considered one of the best-preserved gems of the Inca Trail and stands out for its vertical agricultural terraces and its privileged location among the mountains. Here we will also have time to take a break, explore the place, enjoy the landscapes, and learn more about its importance during the Inca era.

Along with Wiñay Wayna, we will enjoy a delicious Box Lunch in the midst of stunning views.

Next, we will continue walking for approximately two hours until we reach the Intipunku gate.

From this iconic place, we will get our first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, an unforgettable reward for those who travel this historic route.

After a brief rest, we will begin to descend for about 30 minutes until we reach the Guardian's House, considered one of the best places to contemplate the majesty of Machu Picchu and capture the most representative photographs of the citadel.

How far in advance is it recommended to book the 2-day Short Inca Trail?

We recommend making the reservation as soon as possible, ideally 8 months in advance and, at a minimum, 4 to 6 months before during the high season (April to October). This is because the government has strictly limited the number of people authorized to enter the Inca Trail. Daily permits are granted only for 200 hikers, in addition to support staff and porters.

The climate in the Andean region is marked by two seasons: the dry season (from April to October) and the rainy season (from November to March). The Inca Trail remains closed throughout the month of February for maintenance and conservation work, coinciding with the most intense rainy season of the year. The route officially reopens on March 1st.

Most people will arrive in Cusco by air. Remember that the Cusco airport is only for domestic flights. If you are coming directly from abroad through Lima, you must collect your luggage in Lima and check it in again for your flight to Cusco. Four airlines operate round trips between Lima and Cusco. That includes LATAM Airlines, Jet Smart, Sky Airlines. They all offer similar schedules, but we generally recommend LATAM or AVIANCA airlines. What happens if I feel unwell during the first section of the 2-day Short Inca Trail?

If any passenger experiences altitude sickness, exhaustion, or any other issue during the hike, the expert and trained guide will promptly assess the situation and provide immediate assistance. Depending on the passenger's condition and their location, the return will be coordinated via the safest route or the necessary assistance with the relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Culture, SERNANP, and the National Police of Peru (High Mountain Division) if required.

What is the booking process for the 2-day Short Inca Trail?

Step 1: Availability Inquiry

Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check available dates. We will send you a personalized reservation form that each group participant must complete.

Step 2: Passenger Information

To manage the entry permits for the Short Inca Trail, we need the following information from each participant, as it appears in the passport:

Full name

Gender

Passport number

Date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)

Nationality

Without this information, it is not possible to obtain permits or tickets.

Step 3: Deposit and Confirmation

Once we receive the completed forms, we will request a deposit of 300.00 USD per person, an amount (non-refundable and non-transferable) to proceed with the purchase of permits. We recommend booking in advance, as spots fill up quickly.

Step 4: Final Confirmation

When the permits are secured, you will receive your official confirmation invoice. At that moment, your reservation will be guaranteed 100%.

Can I cancel the 2-day Inca Trail and request a refund of my deposit?

Unfortunately, no. Due to the fact that the Inca Trail requires the advance purchase of permits, tickets, and train tickets, the deposit or guarantee paid to confirm the reservation is non-refundable and non-transferable.

We recommend consulting with your sales executive about the specific cancelation conditions and deadlines applicable to your reservation before making any modifications.

What will happen with the outstanding balance?

It would be greatly appreciated if you pay in cash at our office (US dollars or Peruvian soles) here in Cusco. We have many ATMs in the historic center to withdraw money.

Can I leave my luggage in your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Do you give tips?

Tipping is part of the tradition of any hike to Machu Picchu. While it is true that we pay good salaries to all our team, any extra amount is always appreciated. Please note that this is not mandatory and you should never feel pressured by it.
