You travel roughly 120 kilometres by road, passing through the towns of Limatambo and Mollepata until you reach the community of Soraypampa. From Soraypampa an uphill hike of about 2 kilometres begins, ending at Humantay Lake.

About Humantay Lake

Humantay Lake takes its name from the snow-capped peak beside it, which gave its name to this striking lagoon — considered one of the most beautiful and sacred in Cusco. Its fame comes above all from its turquoise waters, framed by the white snows of the Salkantay mountain.

What is the weather like at Humantay Lake?

Humantay Lake sits above 4,200 metres above sea level, which makes for a cold climate. We recommend bringing warm clothing (jacket, hat, scarf and gloves) and anything else you think you may need to stay comfortable.

When is the best time to visit Humantay Lake?

The best time to visit is between May and November, the dry season, when rain is less frequent. That said, the weather in Cusco changes quickly, so it is always wise to carry a rain poncho.

Is the hike to Humantay Lake dangerous?

No, Humantay Lake is a very safe destination. Older visitors are advised to be in good health.

Is there an age limit for the Humantay Lake tour?

There is no age limit for this excursion. It is demanding for parents and children alike, but it is possible to go with children — the best option is to hire a horse for the climb. Remember that the hike is strenuous, at an altitude and temperature that can be uncomfortable for little ones. Going with babies or with elderly travellers is not recommended.

On the way to Humantay Lake you can see:

Flora

Puya Raimondi: a giant plant that can reach up to 15 metres tall and grows in high-altitude areas such as the Humantay region.

Ichu: a type of grass common in the Andes. It is an important part of the high-mountain ecosystem and grows near the lake.

Queñua: a tree native to the Andes that grows at high altitude. Its leaves are traditionally used in herbal medicine and it is an important part of the ecosystem around Humantay Lake.

Wildflowers: around the lake you will often find a variety of wildflowers that add colour to the landscape, such as orchids and bromeliads.

Fauna

Birds: Humantay Lake is a popular spot for birdwatching. Several species can be seen, including the Andean condor, the hawk, the Andean tinamou and hummingbirds.

Mammals: the animals living in the area include the Andean fox, the viscacha and several rodent species adapted to life at high altitude.

Amphibians: less visible than other wildlife, amphibians such as toads and frogs adapted to high-mountain ecosystems also live around the lake.

Fish: Humantay Lake is home to fish adapted to cold, high-altitude waters, including species such as trout.
