Everything you should know before travelling with Sakura

Packing your backpack properly can transform a demanding journey into a comfortable and memorable adventure. So here are some recommendations on what to pack in your backpack to ensure a smooth Inca Trail experience. Take note and write down these recommendations to make your experience the best it can be.

What backpack should I bring for the hike?

The ideal backpack size is 30–40 L. Remember that porters will carry your luggage, so you only need to bring the essentials.

Choose backpacks with good lower back support, a wide hip belt, soft straps, several pockets, and a rain cover so that nothing stops you, not even bad weather.

What should I pack in my suitcase for the Inca Trail?

Having the right gear will make your hike along the Inca Trail comfortable and hassle-free, so here is a list of items you should definitely pack in your backpack:

Clothing

Lightweight T-shirts (quick-drying).

Thermal shirts (to wear as a base layer).

Thermal or fleece jacket.

Jacket that protects against wind and rain.

Hiking pants (preferably convertible to shorts).

Lightweight pants or comfortable clothing for the evening.

Trekking socks (depending on whether you are doing the Classic Inca Trail or the Short Inca Trail).

Underwear and sleepwear (lightweight).

Sun hat and light hat for cold nights.

Rain poncho if you are going during the rainy season.

Footwear

Comfortable hiking boots or sneakers.

Sandals or sneakers for resting.

Technical/safety equipment

Sleeping bag (if you don’t have one, you can rent it).

Walking sticks (they lighten the load and protect your knees); if you don’t have any, you can rent them.

Headlamp + spare batteries.

Waterproof bag for documents and electronic devices.

Hygiene and first aid

Personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo).

Personal towel.

Toilet paper + garbage bags.

Original passport (carry originals with you every day).

What restrictions are there at Machu Picchu?

Bag size at Machu Picchu: Bags, backpacks, or purses exceeding the dimensions of 40×35×20 cm are not allowed, so bring only the essentials when entering. High-heeled shoes or shoes with hard soles are also not allowed, nor are walking sticks with metal tips, umbrellas, alcoholic beverages, baby strollers (baby carriers are allowed), cigarettes (including vapes), sharp objects, and weapons.

Drones and filming: it is prohibited to fly drones in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and its surroundings without a special permit; if you wish to take aerial shots, request permission in advance from the Ministry of Culture.

Porters and load limits: Legal limits and new local regulations place a load limit on porters (for example, recent regulations refer to limits of less than 20 kg for men and 15 kg for women).

Recommendations for experiencing the Inca Trail 2026

Pack clothes in layers; the weather on the Inca Trail is often unpredictable and can surprise you several times in a single day.

Place heavier items, such as water or batteries, close to your hips to maintain balance and walk more comfortably.

Protect your electronics in a Ziploc bag and always carry a small first aid kit with you for any unforeseen circumstances.

Don’t forget to label and close your duffel bag securely, and always keep your valuables with you.

Remember that Sakura Expedition provides you with a duffel bag to carry your belongings. This duffel bag is carried by porters and must not exceed 6 kilograms. Do not use this bag for valuables (carry your passport and money with you).
